Ratel X learns to swim: we are developing an amphibious UGV

The Ratel Robotics team is working on an amphibious modification of the Ratel X ground robotic system. The goal is to teach the platform to cross water obstacles: rivers, canals, and flooded areas that currently limit the routes of ground robotics.

How it works

The prototype received pontoon blocks mounted around the perimeter of the platform. They provide buoyancy while the wheeled base is fully retained the robot, as before, moves confidently on land. Right now we are working on the machine's stability on the water and its movement in an aquatic environment.

"We are teaching Ratel X to stay on the water and paddle a little. We will be swimming soon!" commented Ratel Robotics executive director Taras Ostapchuk on the first tests.

The prototype is under active development the design is refined based on the results of every test.

Why a UGV needs amphibious capability

Water obstacles are one of the main limitations for ground robots at the front and in logistics. Destroyed bridges, rivers, and marshy areas force longer and more dangerous routes. The amphibious Ratel X will be able to:

  • deliver ammunition, provisions, and equipment across water obstacles without a detour;
  • evacuate the wounded where a crossing is unavailable;
  • carry out special tasks in floodplain and marshy zones.

About the base platform

Ratel X is a multi-purpose six-wheeled UGV for logistics and special-purpose tasks:

  • operating radius up to 115 km;
  • payload up to 400 kg;
  • speed about 14 km/h.
