What is a UGV and how Ukraine uses ground robots

A UGV (unmanned ground vehicle) is an uncrewed ground machine operated remotely, with no human on board. On the battlefield it hauls ammunition and supplies to forward positions, evacuates the wounded, lays and clears mines, and carries mission equipment. The operator drives it from cover, hundreds of metres to several kilometres away — so the robot takes over the most dangerous part of the job: the "last mile" to the front line, where moving people or trucks means casualties.

The same class of machines goes by several names: UGV, ground drone, ground robotic system, and in Ukraine — НРК (NRK, "ground robotic complex"). There is no technical difference between these terms.

Types of UGV by mission

Ground robots are classified not by size or chassis but by the mission the platform is built for. In practice the lines blur — a logistics platform fitted with a medical stretcher becomes an evacuation vehicle — but there are five basic types.

A separate category is UGV support equipment: trailers for delivering robots to the operating area (the logistics trailer platform carries up to 1,020 kg), swappable batteries, and mobile workshops. The more intensively units field ground robots, the more this part of the ecosystem matters.

What a UGV consists of

Whatever the mission, every UGV combines the same building blocks:

  • Chassis — wheeled or tracked. Wheels are quieter, faster on roads and easier to repair in the field; tracks handle soft ground better. Modern wheeled platforms with off-road tyres and high clearance (400 mm and more on Ratel X) come close to tracked vehicles in mobility.
  • Electric drivetrain — electric motors are nearly silent and have a low thermal signature, which makes the vehicle harder to spot with thermal imaging. Power comes from batteries; quick battery swaps matter in the field (Nurse TB carries three swappable packs).
  • Control and communications link — a radio link with repeaters, or satellite communications. It is the link, not the mechanics, that usually defines the real operating radius under enemy electronic warfare.
  • Cameras — day and night, for driving and for confirming the mission.
  • Payload — a cargo bed, medical stretcher, mine flail, mining module, or mounts for third-party equipment.
  • Operator console — a protected terminal streaming video and telemetry.

How to choose a UGV for the mission

  1. Start from the mission, not the model. Logistics, evacuation, engineering and equipment carriage put different demands on the platform — a "universal" machine is always a compromise.
  2. Take payload capacity with a margin. The real load is always heavier than planned: water, comms and equipment ride along with the ammunition.
  3. Count range for the full cycle. A route is there, back, and manoeuvring around dangerous spots — not a straight line. For long legs look at platforms like Ratel X (up to 100 km) or Ratel M (from 80 km).
  4. Test the communications link in real conditions. Datasheet range and range under electronic warfare are different numbers. Ask about repeaters and alternative channels.
  5. Assess field repairability. A robot your unit cannot fix becomes cargo. Access to spare parts, batteries and service is part of the choice, not an afterthought.
  6. Budget for operator training. The crew determines how effective a UGV is. For units of Ukraine's Defence Forces, operator training on Ratel systems is free of charge.

Who operates a UGV

A UGV operator is a distinct military speciality that emerged in Ukraine's Defence Forces along with the mass fielding of ground robots. The operator drives by camera feed, plans the route, watches telemetry and works hand in hand with the unit the robot supports. Training takes from a few days to a few weeks depending on the platform and the mission set.
